Chapter Ten

But she didn’t use her magic to drag Hans to the pot, preferring to tug him there as if she needed to test the weight of his new bulk. Her green magic held him hostage, bound, and unable to fight her while she pulled him by his arm toward her cookery.

“Might have both of you,” she said uncertainly, getting to the pot and tilting it to allow someone to climb in. “In you get.”

“What?”

“Get in.” She said again, more firmly and with much more annoyance.

“I don’t know what you mean,” Hans said with a shake of his head, glancing over at me before looking back at the witch.

“In.” She tutted, prodding him with her finger before shoving him aside entirely and beginning to demonstrate what she wanted him to do. This was the moment he seemed to wait for as he pushed the witch into the pot of boiling water. Her screams seemed ethereal as she gargled and gagged, and then, before our eyes, melted away to nothing but bone.

Her body popped and crackled, and the magic that held us disappeared and Hans stood, testing out the last of his strength before looking over at the remains of the witch. Satisfied that she was dead, Hans turned and walked over to me, taking me under the arm and all but lifting me into his arms.

This was it. This was the exact ending that was supposed to happen, except it was supposed to be his sister here. Not me. How had things played out the same? Without Gretel here, I now needed to come up with a new story for her.

“Are you okay?” Still holding me in his arms, he shifted my weight and reached out to touch my head and face, assessing me for any damage.

“You did it.” I breathed in relief, throwing my arms around his neck finally and hugging him tightly. He laughed in soft surprise before hugging me back and nodding his head.

“I told you I would get us out of here. You just had to give me time to come up with something.”

“You’re so clever. I can’t believe that worked. Witches melt… I mean…” I was so astonished, had my earlier thoughts about The Wicked Witch made the melting a reality? I was confident that in the original story Gretel had burned the witch alive, not melted her. It couldn’t be a coincidence. Maybe my magic was back.

“Well, I had a lot of motivation to get us out of here.” He said, looking down at me and smiling a little more. My heart jumped slightly, and my head ran away with itself.

I’d completed Hans’ story. Technically, I could choose him, and there would be no coincidences. He had his happily ever after officially now. Nothing was stopping me from being interested in him and pursuing it. I'd never felt closer to someone than I did right now.

As if he could read my thoughts he began to lean in, his lips brushing mine. I had been kissing too many princes up until right now and letting one more was just a recipe for disaster.
